When Della awoke, the sun was streaming through the window, and she was still cradled in Kallie’s arms. She moved slightly to look into Kallie’s face.

Kallie was smiling at her. “You’re awake?”

Della nodded sleepily.

“Would you mind rolling over? My arm is asleep.”

“Oh, sorry!” Della rolled away from Kallie, her skin crying out at the loss of Kallie’s touch.

Kallie swung her left arm back and forth and stretched it over her head. “Ow…ow…ow…pins and needles.”

“Why didn’t you wake me up before?” Della asked.

“I just couldn’t. You looked so comfortable.” Kallie rubbed her left arm briskly with her right hand. “Ahh…that’s better.” She started to sit up.

Della stopped her, rolling her body back onto Kallie’s and gently nudging one knee between Kallie’s legs. “Wait a minute,” she said, stroking her face. “I don’t know when I’ll get you back in bed with me.”

Kallie made no protest. In fact, she smiled.

Della began stroking the back of Kallie’s head, playing with her hair. She pulled Kallie’s lips to hers and felt the pulsating of Kallie’s core against her knee.

“Oh god I want you,” Kallie groaned.

“I’m here. I want you, too. Take me.”

“I can’t. I have to get ready for work.”

“So call in sick.”

“Della, I’m just not ready, yet. Neither are you. You may think you want to be with me, but you’re still thinking of Andi, aren’t you?”

Della rolled away so that she was lying on her back. “Not the way you mean, but yes, I am thinking of her. She scares me.”

Kallie nodded sympathetically and stroked Della’s forehead. “You can stay here while I’m at work, or I can take you to your parents’ house. Which do you prefer?”

Della thought about spending the day among Kallie’s things, breathing in her scent, touching things she had touched. Then she thought about being alone all day, and her stomach twisted. Suppose Andi found her here and guessed…? It was too awful to contemplate. “Could you take me to Mom and Dad’s?”

“I think that’s the best idea, but I wanted it to be your choice.” She kissed Della’s nose and got out of bed to shower.

“You should have been a social worker,” Della called after her. She reached idly for the remote and flipped the TV on. Nothing but news programs. Not a single station was running an old comedy like Bewitched or I Dream of Jeanie. She was sick of bad news.

She turned the television off and picked up the phone to call her father. At that moment, Kallie paraded out of the bathroom wearing nothing but a black lace bra and panties. She went to her closet and flung it open, giving Della a good view of her backside as she picked out her clothes for the day.

“Oh, no fair!” Della complained.

“What was that, honey?”

“Nothing, Dad.”

Kallie smiled serenely at her and began to dress in a gray pantsuit.

Della got off the phone. “You realize you’re sending me seriously mixed signals.”

Kallie giggled. “I just couldn’t help myself…the look on your face!” Come on, let’s have some breakfast and I’ll drive you over to your parents’ house.
